The FESTIVAL of AVIGNON

The official festival of Avignon (In), is created in 1947 by Jean Vilar. A symbolic figure of the festival: Gérard Philipe. Of a week of show originally it takes place now over three weeks. One of the biggest festivals of France and other countries. Played up in 1968 and an interruption in 60 years, in 2003, with the strike of the entertainment workers.

In 2011, 150 000 persons attended 42 shows and 300 representations.

The alternative festival ( off ), since 1967 gathers known or unknown troops. They also animate with their street shows (with the others, the troops or the individuals) the pavements of Avignon. The “off” festival is one of the biggest festivals of independent companies to the world.

Off 2011: approximately 950 companies, 1150 shows(entertainments) and events.
